Master’s program prepares students for higher education careers

Master’s program prepares students for higher education careers

Posted on Thursday, March 28, 2024

College will launch a new graduate program in higher education

In an effort to reach graduate students aiming to work on a smaller, faith-based campus, the college recently added a post-secondary degree in higher education.

Outside of large, public universities, options are limited for higher education master’s programs at private colleges in Georgia.

“We felt there was a need for this degree to be implemented here at LC,” said Dr. John Head, Vice President for Enrollment and Student Experience. “Besides Mercer University, we are the only other private institution where students can earn a graduate degree in higher education.”

The one-year degree will combine a strong academic foundation with real-world experience.

“This will give our cohort exposure to the business side of a college campus,” he said. “They’re not only going to learn about student development theory, but also fiscal and legal issues in higher education. And as a Methodist institution, we also will focus on faith development.”

Graduate assistantships will benefit students pursuing this degree.

“They will receive compensation either through housing or a stipend,” he said. “Every student in the program will be placed in a department tailored to their interests, so they’re earning funds for the work they do, while also gaining career-focused skills.”

Cohorts who go through this program will be ready for a variety of roles in such areas as Housing, Student Life, Admissions, Career Services and Athletics.

Dr. Gretta Milam, Education Chair and Director of Graduate Studies, will oversee the program. Current faculty and administrators will teach courses, with the aim of adding more full-time faculty in the future.

Current undergraduates will have the opportunity to learn more about this master’s degree during an information session on Wednesday, April 3, at 4 p.m., in Corn Auditorium.

Applications are open for the program, which is scheduled to begin in the summer or fall of 2024. These can be found on the program website.
